Marines,

On Thursday, July 15th I attended a memorial service for one of our detachment members. Marine Lyle Enos “Mike” Cornwall was memorialized in a very moving ceremony. Mike was an Iwo Jima Marine, landing with the third assault wave on 19 Feb 45. He survived 33 days of intense fighting on that island and returned from WWII, was discharged, and lived a productive and fruitful life. Not too long ago I also attended a service for another of our Iwo Jima Marines, Jack Lewis. Both of these gentlemen were part of the “Greatest Generation” and served during a time when America was truly at war. They were husbands, fathers, and provided for their families. They lived good lives and will not be forgotten. They are Marines and contributed to the legacy of our Corps. Semper Fidelis Jack and Mike.

Bring a Marine with you to our next Detachment meeting.

Semper Fidelis,

Michael Wilson

Marine Corps Coordinating Council, John StofielLarry Stewart – We had a pretty sparse turnout at our last meeting. We had an interesting discussion about the YM’s about whether the YM’s could be members on the council. Mike Howard thinks the YM’s need to be completely supported and every YM Unit should be represented on the council. It was a positive discussion but no changes were made at that point. Dan Horton the chair of the Semper Fi Golf Classic is scheduled for 1 October 2010. LtCol Holmquist shared with our fundraising committee which has now been dropped as no one was stepping forward to assist with this, this would have been in addition to the golf classic so this was dropped. No volunteers to support a new program of which if the member organizations were to take this on under the MCCC then we would split the proceeds with that organization. The Corps Family Day is on 7 August. At Blue Lake park in Fairview, OR. The Change of Command for the I&I is on 9 July and the COC for the reserve side is on the 10 July. The new I&I is LtCol Duncan Buchanan and the CO for the Reserve Bn is LtCol Sean Riddell.
VA Voluntary Service Committee, George LaFraziaRex Hopper – 18 Sept is a volunteer luncheon/recognition event. Our Bake/Ice cream sales are going good. The golf cart program is alive and well and thriving. The 40 et 8 is providing us a new golf cart to utilize for transportation for our Veterans arriving at the hospital. We started out with 5 Marines from the detachment with this program, we are now up to 36 volunteers providing support with this, and looking at about 40 volunteers when the new building is completed on the campus.

  Woof Woof fellow Dogs,

Our next Growl will be on 14 August 2010 at the Dog House otherwise known as the 40et8 Chateau, muster at 0800 for chow, 0900 Growl. My son is getting married that day, so I may be required by the CNC to on duty, but will be thinking of all my Dogs.

Keep in mind the 6th ESB’s Picnic at Blue Lake State Park in Troutdale; I regard it as one of the top three events of the dog year. Here is a chance not only to serve, but to observe, a traditional Marine Corps Field Meat. Tug of War anyone. Chows not bad either.

When I spoke with a recent graduate of MCRD Hollywood, a few weeks ago, he told me that they did not have Junk on the Bunk (JOB) inspections any more. This brought to mind one of those boot camp/OCS moments.

The inspection was to take place on Saturday morning; with the hint that base liberty was a possibility should the platoon pass the inspection. As a veteran of almost eight weeks service, I was skeptical. Saturday came; the platoon had slept on the deck the night before so that we could perfectly align all of our 782 gear and uniforms items on the springs. Each item to be inspected had either been starched and pressed or cleaned and a light coat of LSA applied. Dental floss had been use as a snap line to insure proper alignment form rack to rack. The entire company was going through this rite of passage, so, as we all stood ready at the foot of our racks, all of the Drill Instructors descended upon their respective squad bays. My platoon’s three DI’s, move as a team from candidate to candidate, admonishing them for transgressions of all form and manner. They had been at it for about twenty minutes, with flying E-Tools and tarnished mess gear, decorating the Company area.

It was at this time when one of the DI’s inserted his hands into the haversack of one of the candidates. I remember his pulling his hands out of the haversack and moving to the side of the Senior DI and whispering something in his ear. The Sr. DI then inserted his hands into the haversack, and withdrew them. Then without a word all three of them left the squad bay. Not moving an inch, we all started looking at each other, wondering what was up.

Then came the moment we all dreaded the most, as the Senior DI for the entire Company entered the squad bay. His presents demanded that even our digestive tacks come to attention and certain other mussels to constrict to the point of pain. Without a word, he and our Senior DI moved to the haversack in question. With one smooth motion the GySgt inserted his hand into the haversack and withdrew a Clark candy bar placing it under the nose of the candidate who up until that moment in his life, had thought he might live long enough to see another sunrise. The GySgt, in his best and boldest command voice said only three words, “CLARK BAR, Candidate!!!”. The GySgt then replaced the Clark bar in the haversack. Having delivered this three-word admonishment, the four of them left the squad bay and went into the platoon office. What felt like an eternity, but what in reality was only a few moments passed, when we heard one of the DI’s call for the candidate in question to report. The platoon, still standing at attention at the foot of our racks, repeated the order and watched the sacrificial lamb double time out the hatch, came to attention and rap on the pine, and report to the Company Gunny. We then again heard the same adnishment, “CLARK BAR!, Get Back!”. If I learned anything, during my time as a Marine want-a–be, it was that nothing, but nothing, brings home a message like repetition. It was in this spirit that for a least the next thirty minutes that poor candidate was called upon to report, only to hear the same two words, “CLARK BAR!”. Over and over he would return from the office, come to attention at the foot of his rack, only to hear his name called out to report. As we watched his right hand turn from a shade of bright red through many shades of purple and lastly a distinct shade of green from rapping on the pine.

At no time did any of the rest us even consider moving from the position of attention. At first there were some smiles, which soon became pity, and then moved to concern for our fellow candidate’s well being. Then, with only about twenty percent of the platoon having been inspected, and with no further amplification forthcoming, the Jr. DI came into the squad bay and informed us that base liberty would commence after the noon meal. I have never been able to look at a Clark bar since and not thought of that day.

Woof Woof,

PDD Jim
